Cone Size Chart: Which Cartridge Size Do I Need?

Your cartridge size is your cone length: 70mm, 84mm, 98mm Slim, 98mm Classic, 109mm, 140mm, or the 84mm tube. Then choose how many cones you want to fill per session, from 7 to 389. Standard 7–121-cone cartridges run on the VB1 or VB2 vibration table, and the 300 Series (315–389) runs on the VB2, so one table covers every size you sell. Every kit includes the vibration table, which helps you fill in about half the time of hand-filling (our own estimate): a well-trained maker fills about 121 cones in about an hour on a 121X cartridge with a table (an estimate).

Typical fill weights are from Humboldt Filling Machines' sizing guide and depend on your material. For 140mm cones and 84mm tubes, choose the kit or cartridge in that size; the C-ONE comes in 70mm, 84mm, 98mm Classic, 98mm Slim and 109mm. Text the shop with your cone size: (707) 296-1355

Step 1: Measure or identify your cone

Measure your cone from the tip to the open end, in millimeters. That length is the size name: 70, 84, 98, 109 or 140mm. If the box only gives a name, use the "Also called" column. A King is 109mm, a 1¼ is 84mm, and a Dogwalker is 70mm.

At 98mm there are two widths, Slim and Classic. See the comparison below. Length decides fit: every cone maker uses the same pitch, so any standard cone of your length fits the matching Humboldt Filling Machines cartridge. Slender 98mm cones, like Reefers, are narrower at the open end and take the 98mm Slim cartridge.

Not sure? Order a C-ONE single cone filler for $9.99 and test your cone first.

Step 2: Choose your batch size

Each cone size comes in several capacities. The number on the cartridge is how many cones it fills in one session.

  • 7 cones ($29): test runs and personal batches
  • 19 cones: home use and small runs
  • 55 cones: steady small batches
  • 121 cones: the sweet spot for small brands and shops (about an hour for a well-trained maker with a table, an estimate)
  • 315–389 cones: high-capacity production

The fit table shows every capacity available for your cone. Start where your daily number sits today, then move up through the 7–121-cone cartridges on the same table. The 300 Series (315–389) runs on the VB2. Run your numbers in the ROI calculator →

Step 3: Starter kit or cartridge only?

Buy a starter kit if you're new to Humboldt Filling Machines. Every standard kit ships with the cartridge, riser, tamping tool, vibration table, stabilization mat and switched extension cord, so it's everything you need to start filling. Kits that fill up to 121 cones include the VB1 table and SP1 mat; 300 Series kits (315 to 389 cones, plus the 389-tube Artisan Tube kit) include the VB2 table and SP2 mat. 300 Series kits use a detachable base in place of the riser. Kits start at $369. Shop Starter Kits →

Buy a cartridge if you already own a Humboldt Filling Machines VB1 or VB2 vibration table and want a standard 7–121-cone cartridge. For high-capacity cartridges up to 389 cones, use the VB2 table. Each cartridge comes with its own riser (300 Series: detachable base) and tamping tool. Cartridges start at $29. Shop Cartridges →

Want to see the steps first? See how it works

Need just the table? The VB1 Circular vibration table (9 inch diameter) is $369, or the VB2 Rectangular (8.75 x 11 inch) for 300 Series cartridges, $449.

98mm Slim vs 98mm Classic

Both cones are 98mm long. The difference is width and how much they hold.

  • 98mm Slim (also called Reefer) holds about 0.5g. Humboldt Filling Machines' Slim cartridge fills 121 cones and costs $319.
  • 98mm Classic (also called Regular) holds about 0.75g. Classic cartridges come in 7, 19, 55, 121 and 331, from $29.

At 98mm, width decides the cartridge. Slender 98s, like Reefers, are narrower at the open end and take the 98mm Slim. Standard-width 98mm cones take the Classic. Not sure? Test one cone in a $9.99 C-ONE first.

High-capacity 300 Series

The 300 Series fills up to 389 cones in one session. It comes in 70mm (389), 84mm (389), 98mm Classic (331) and 109mm King (315). The 315–389-cone options in each size are the 300 Series.

The 300 Series also fills tubes. Two 315-tube cartridges are available: one for 98.6 × 9.4mm glass-filter tubes and one for 109mm dark-brown glass-filter tubes.

300 Series cartridges use a detachable base with red clamps instead of a riser. They run on the VB2 table. The 300 Series unloads differently from standard cartridges. Switch the table off, pick up the cartridge and release the red clamps to remove the detachable base. Set the cartridge top down on a flat surface, and the cones push up so you can remove each one and twist the end to finish.

Can I use one vibration table for several cone sizes?
Yes. Humboldt Filling Machines' standard cartridges swap on the same vibration table, so you buy one table and add a cartridge for each size you fill. Up to 389 cones per session with the 70mm, 84mm and 300 Series cartridges. The 98mm Classic tops out at 331, the 109mm King at 315, and the 98mm Slim and 140mm Peacemaker at 121. The 84mm Artisan Tube fills up to 389 tubes. Smaller cartridges fill 7, 19 or 55.

Get a starter kit if you need the vibration table. Kits that fill up to 121 cones include the VB1 table and SP1 mat, cartridge, riser, tamping tool and switched cord. 300 Series kits (315 to 389 cones, plus the 389-tube Artisan Tube kit) include the VB2 table and SP2 mat. Kits start at $369. If you already run a Humboldt Filling Machines VB1 or VB2 table, a standard 7–121-cone cartridge on its own is all you need, from $29.
